Radiocautery/Electrocautery
It is a dermato surgical procedure which involves the passage of high frequency radio waves (0.5 – 4.0 MHz) through soft tissue to cut, coagulate, or remove the tissue and seal the blood vessels from bleeding.
Uses of Radiocautery
There are various uses for Radiocautery. They include removal of the following,
- Skin tags
- Viral warts
- Milia, also known as whiteheads
- Moles and DPN’s
- Molluscum contagiosum – a viral infection
- Syringomas – mild skin tumors
- Seborrheic keratosis – senile wart
These are safe cosmetic treatments.
It involves the passage of radio waves into the skin to perform the removal or reshaping of a lesion. Radiofrequency uses low temperature, high-frequency energy radio waves to cauterize warts. RF treatment can cut and coagulate simultaneously without any need for applying pressure.
Side effects are typically minimal and short-lived, limited to mild and temporary swelling, redness, and tingling, depending on the treatment.
RF surgery is a better tool as compared with electrocautery and has distinct advantages like less bleeding, cutting as well as coagulation ability, minimal tissue trauma, faster healing and good esthetic results.
In the next few weeks, a crust or scab may develop over the surface of the wound. This is a normal part of wound healing.
If the wound surface area is large, you are advised to keep the wound area dry for 24-48 hour. After that, you are allowed to have a normal shower or bath. If the electrocauterized region is over the face, with small surface area, you can wash your face with gentle soap and water 6 hours after the procedure.
